A large group of Armenian-Americans protested the visit of Armenian President Serzh Sargysan to Los Angeles this week. Sargysan is attempting to normalize relations with Russia, a move that has angered those who insist Turkey formally recognize the Armenian genocide of 1915.
Armenians are also upset that President Obama is pushing for formal relations between Turkey and Armenia, when he made a promise during campaigning in 2008 that he would push Turkey to recognize the genocide.
- Why do you think the U.S. government is pushing for normalized relations and avoiding the genocide question?
- Should Obama uphold his promise to recognize the Armenian genocide?
- How does the threat of instability in the middle east play into this (or not)?
